Striking Maritime Workers’ Call off Strike

The Maritime Workers’Union Of Nigeria, (MWUN) has called off it one day strike action against the activities of shipping companies. MWUN had today, Monday, 5 June 2023 called out its members working for affected shipping refusing to a negotiated emoluments, salaries and an agreed specified retirement benefits for workers under the shipping companies.
However, a truce was reached following the intervention by the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) which ensured that the strike action was suspend following an agreement between the Shipping lines,
the Union and the Shipping Companies/ Agencies & Freight Forwarders Employers Association (SCAFFEA) on Minimum Standard of Condition of Service in the Shipping Industry.
Presentations were made by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council through the Executive Secretary, Hon Emmanuel Jime, and also by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria through the President-GeneralComrade (Prince) Adewale Adeyanju and the Shipping Companies/ Agencies & Freight forwarders Employers Association, represented by Mr Ascanio Russo.
The resolution reached at the end of the deliberation are as follows: That the Maritime
Workers Union and Shipping Companies/Agencies and Freight Forwarders Employers Association expressed commitment for a sincere negotiations on the Minimum Standard of Condition of Service in the Industry
“Parties agreed to a timeline of One Month starting from Monday 5th June 2023 to 4th July 2023 for completion of the negotiations.
“Parties to establish an acceptable Minimum Standards on the Condition of Service in the Shipping Industry especially on gratuity.”
