The Nigeria Customs Service, through its Oyo/Osun Area Command, has clearly shown gallantry with its unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health and economic stability by intercepting a substantial haul of fake pharmaceutical drugs and other contraband items worth over N1.8 billion.
Speaking at a press briefing held recently at the Command headquarters, Customs Area Controller Comptroller Ben Oramalugo shared the Command’s recent anti-smuggling wins. Comptroller Ben laid emphasis on the strategic positioning of the Command’s operations to enforce the Federal Government’s border closure policy strictly, thwarting attempts to smuggle in prohibited goods dangerous to public health and the welfare of Nigerian citizens.
“We have effectively halted the influx of contraband items, including those posing serious threats to both our economy and the well-being of our people,” Comptroller Ben said.
The interceptions included 53 sacks of counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs valued at ₦1,739,000,000.00, alongside 1,309 pieces of used tires and various other illegal goods. Notable among the seized items were foreign parboiled rice, premium motor spirit (PMS), Indian hemp, used clothing, foreign wine, and vegetable oil, collectively worth N1,890,022,931.00.
Highlighting the Command’s operational efficiencies despite prevailing economic challenges, Comptroller Ben praised the revenue generation efforts, disclosing that the Command amassed a staggering sum of N5,664,295,751.15 in February 2024. This impressive figure, when combined with January 2024 collections, amounted to a cumulative sum of N12,489,250,090.11 for the fiscal year.
Emphasizing the continued closure of borders in adherence to the Federal Government’s directive, Comptroller Ben reaffirmed the vigilance and dedication of Command officers in safeguarding national interests. He extended gratitude to traditional rulers, local government chairmen, and stakeholders in Oyo and Osun States for their collaborative efforts in sensitizing communities about the adverse effects of smuggling on the economy.
