Alhasan Yahaya Wins Landslide, Emerges NUJ National President as Uzodimma Harps integrity, ethical practise

Comrade Alhasan Yahaya has emerged the new National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in a landslide victory.
The Victorious Alhassan polled a total of 436 votes to defeat his opponents Comrades Bamidele Atunbi who garnered 97 votes and Garba Mohammed who got 39 votes.
The much attended election was conducted at the 8th Triennial Delegates Conference of the union held in Owerri, Imo State.
Comrade Yahaya who hails from Gombe State was the deputy National President of NUJ.
Elected as Deputy National President is Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde, General Manager, Radio Nigeria, Bronze FM, Edo State and the former BoT member of the union.
With this, Comrade Oyetunde becomes the first female Deputy National President of NUJ.
Other National Officers of the union elected include, the National Treasurer, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, who was the former Abia State Council Chairman, while Ronke Samo was reelected the Vice President of B-Zone (Southwest).
The conference brought over 620 delegates from the 36 State Councils across the cointry.
The new NUJ President is from Gombe State and was the Deputy National President of the Union before his emergence.
The newly-elected Deputy National President, Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde emerged unopposed.
The Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Comrade Mike Ikeogwu, who conducted the election, along with the Representative of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, said the election was free and fair, while commending members for their orderly conduct and cooperation.
Before the election, the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, who played host to the union, called on the media to always fact-check their facts or any information given to them before publishing, saying this is to stem the tide of fake news.
He also enjoined the over 620 journalists gathered at the event to uphold the integrity of the journalism profession and to take proactive steps to promote ethical reporting, while combating the spread of disinformation.
The governor urged the union to strengthen the Nigeria Press Council, invest in training and development programmes for journalists, as well as, work closely with social media platforms to address the challenges of the digital terrain.
Governor Uzodimma was decorated as the Grand Patron of the Union in Imo state.
He said: “My administration is fully committed to supporting a free, independent and thriving press. To serve this commitment, we established the Governance Media Excellence Award to recognise and celebrate outstanding journalists.
“We are also providing logistics support to support media unions like NUJ, NAWOJA and other correspondent chapels by providing corporate support to facilitate their operations.”
